7.1 Herbs, Shrubs and Trees

There are various plants surrounding us. Some of have green leaves, while some others have reddish ones. Some have huge red flowers; some have tiny blue ones, while some have none.

There are various plants surrounding us. Some of them are much smaller than us; some of them are about our size, and some of them which are much taller than us.

The plants with green and tender stems are called herbs. They are usually short and may not have many branches.

Some plants develop branches near the base of stem. The stem is hard but not very thick. Such plants are called shrubs.

Some plants are very tall and have hard and thick stem. The stems have branches in the upper part, much above the ground. Such plants are called trees.

Plants with weak stems that cannot stand upright but spread on the ground are called creepers. While those that take support and climb up are called climbers.

7.2 Stem

Stems bear leaves, branches, buds, flowers and fruits.

7.3 Leaf

The part of leaf by which it is attached to the stem is called petiole. The broad, green part of the leaf is called lamina.

These lines on the leaf are called veins.

The design made by veins in a leaf is called the leaf venation.

In the leaves of grass you might have seen that the veins are parallel to one another is known as parallel venation.

Water comes out of leaves in the form of vapour by a process called transpiration. Plants release a lot of water into the air through this process.

The process making food by plants is called photosynthesis. In this process oxygen is given to use the food prepared by leaves ultimately gets stored in different parts of plant.

7.4 Root

Root is the part of plant that has many sores and fitted in the soil. The roots help in holding the plant firmly to the soil. They anchor the plant to the soil.

The main root is called tap root and the smaller roots are called lateral roots. Plants with roots as shown do not have a main root. All roots seem similar and these are called fibrous roots.

7.5 Flower

A flower is the part of a plant. That is responsible for making new seeds. It is often made of petals and may have an attractive scent.Flower consists of a floral axis upon which are borne the essential organs of reproduction

Plant parts as food

The prominent parts of the open flower is known as petals and the part is made of small leaf-like structures are known as sepals.

The innermost part of flower is called the pistil.

The lowermost and swollen part of the pistil is known as ovary.

There are some small bead like structures inside the ovary is known as ovules.

The number of sepals, petals, stamens and pistils may also be different in different flowers.
